Learnings, sort of

And that would be because I didn’t sleep this night. I tried, but the fact that I’m kinda staying up all night and sleeping through the day makes it hard to go to bed at night when I actually have to, so yeah. I gave up at some point around six in the morning and then I got up to wash the dishes and now I’m here at uni’s lab kinda thinking about writing fics and FEELING WEIRD. Because I didn’t sleep.
So I feel weird.
But at least I got to read a lot last night (since I didn’t sleep), even if we had a blackout (again. I’m starting to get used to this), but that didn’t stop me because I had a flashlight and you know, this is nothing, a few years ago we had blackout while I was reading The Half Blood Prince and read it in the light of my cellphone.
This time the book was about the relations between Brazil, Argentina and USA (bet you didn’t see this coming) and I swear it’s fascinating. We’re at some point around 1920 and they had more bad breakups than I can count, and their relationship is cool on its own merits, but when you add other countries to the mix it gets even better. So far we had USA (he’s important) and England (also important) and Germany (relevant but not as much as the other two) and France (well, he’s trying).
And, of course, we have the rest of South America. There was this cool part circa 18-somethings that went a little like this: Brazil and Argentina were rivals, trying to a) get influence over countries like Uruguay and Paraguay and b) prevent the other from doing so. Both were convinced the other wanted to attack them and neither one actually wanted to, but, you know. Brazil and Chile were traditional friends (no borders, no reason to fight, eh?), even if they never actually wrote it down, and this made Martín really worried, because he was surrounded, so everytime he was fighting with Chile, he tried to befriend Brazil and every time things with Brazil went bad he had to be nice to Chile, because he couldn’t afford to be attacked on two fronts. And Chile’s friendship was important to Brazil because he didn’t want Chile and Argentina uniting against him, and also because it prevented Argentina from trying to annex Bolivia. Brazil’s friendship was important to Chile because it forced Argentina to calm the fuck down (see above) and not attack him and also because he had problems with Peru and Bolivia and couldn’t afford more enemies than he already had. Bolivia wanted a part of Paraguay, but couldn’t get it because, well, it belonged to Paraguay, and Paraguay was totally Argentina’s satellite, and Bolivia also wanted a way to the sea but couldn't get it because of Chile and Paraguay wanted to be left alone but not really, because he wouldn’t be able to prevent anyone from annexing him and I think Uruguay wanted everyone to go die in a fire, but he was siding with Brazil for now, not that Argentina wasn’t trying to make them fight and that’s not even the story, that’s just the setting.
Like I said, fascinating. So much that I read it with the flashlight and I didn’t even mind the author’s tendency to go into Yoda mode every now and then (agreed on the treaty was not, for oil was not found in Paraguay. WTF)
And why, will you ask, and I telling you all of this?
No reason. I just wanted to share.
Also, I still feel weird.
(and the first person to write Argentina/USA will totally get a cookie. It's like a really REALLY bad date going on for centuries. Same about Argentina/England)
